Is SEO dying?

Add comment December 14th, 2006 08:32pm Ely

There has been some talk lately that the known Search Engine Optimization methods might not be as effective in the near future. Techniques such as:

  • Optimizing Web Site Content
  • Getting a lot of incoming links to a website
  • Creating rich text content websites

… might actually give way to more traditional, buzz marketing methods.

Why is this so? Well it seems the Search Engine Optimization has been used and abused too much. The Search Engines like Google, MSN and Yahoo want relevant content to come out on their results pages. As they tweak their algorithms, old known SEO techniques are identified and taken into consideration.

What’s your take on this?

Can you overdo SEO?

A common discussion among Search Engine Marketing experts is the issue of overdoing SEO. Some experts argue that too much web marketing is penalized by Search Engines. This happens when web developers focus on content for search engines and not for people. We believe this occurs when:

  • Link-building is unnatural - you get 10,000 incoming links to your site in one day. Unless your web page was a victim of the ‘digg effect’, this volume of links is unheard of. Thus a site will receive penalties.
  • Using black hat methods to fool search engines. This includes hidden text and exploiting search engine flaws.

It’s quite alarming when this happens because the web pages would suddenly drop out of the search engine results page. We’ve seen it happen.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Training - Leverage Search Engine Technology

Add comment November 27th, 2006 08:28pm Ely

This is your first Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Training. SEO is generally considered a function of on-site and off-site optimization.

On-site Optimization basics

First, look at your website’s source code. You can do this by positioning your mouse cursor your website, right-clicking and choosing “view source” or “view source code” on the menu that appears.

A Search Engine Friendly web site code should first have a meta description and meta keyword tag. It should look like this:

  • < meta name=description content= Description of the website />
  • < meta name=keyword content=keywords for the website />

These tags should be placed just before the tag.

Second, all javascript and CSS tags should be on external files. Looking a the source code, you should see things such as these:

  • < script type=text/javascript xsrc=http://www.yourwebsite.com/javascript.js>
  • < link rel=stylesheet xhref=http://www.yourwebsite.com/stylesheet.css type=text/css />

Having these indicate that the javascript and stylesheets are on a separate program. You shouldn’t have things like these:

var fs_time=(new Date()).getTime();
function wfs() {
try {
if (parent!=window && parent.wfs) {
return false;
}
}catch(e){}…

…especially on the top half of the web site’s source code. Having too much irrelevant content on the code tend to deter Search Engine Bots (small programs that do automated tasks) from finding and indexing your site properly.

Make sure to use Header tags < h1>…< /h1> for important key words for your site.

Off-site Optimization Basics

The goal of off-site optimization is get as many links to the your personal blog site as possible. How do you do this?

First, you must submit your website to the various online directories. A new website should be submitted to no more than 20 online directories a day. Anything more than that and your site could get banned. Google and other search engines often protect their users from spammers by raising an alarm (red flag) on sites that get linked too fast. To prevent this, a moderated and controlled link-building strategy must be used.

New blogs/sites have to go through an “indexing phase” and make take time to show up in search engine’s results.

One main problem with a manual method of submission to web-directories, it takes a while to fill up online submission forms. To solve that, we can use some online tools. Follow the exercise below:

A Practical Exercise On Link Building:

  1. If you are not using it already, download the mozilla firefox browser and install it in your computer.
  2. Go to this site : https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1490/ and install the formsaver addon for mozilla firefox. This is a nice online tool that saves the contents of a form so that users can re-use it for other websites.
  3. Go to a free directories site such as http://www.directorylist.org/free-directories/. This sites lists other online directories where you could submit your website freely. (Note: You are usually required to submit an email address. Expect to get subscription messages from the owner of the various online directories).
  4. Choose a free directory, right-click on the link and choose “Open Link in New Tab” among the menu. When you do this, a new tab just near the top of your browser will appear. If you click on that tab, you will see the new website you just opened.
  5. Click on the new tab and look at the online directory you just opened. Look for a link text like “Submit Site” or “Add Link”. If you find it, click on it and you should see a website submission form. If you can’t find a form, just go back to http://www.directorylist.org/free-directories/ and choose another online directory.
  6. Once you see a submission form, fill it up with pertinent information for your website. DO NOT PRESS THE SUBMIT BUTTON YET. You must save the information on the form using formsaver (the mozilla addon you installed earlier). To do this, right-click on the mouse button while it is over the site. You should see “FormSaver” along the menu choices. When you press on this, you will be asked to name the bookmarklet. Choose a name that would be useful for you. Take note, you may have to save several versions of the form bookmarklets because submission forms on the directories come in various formats.
  7. Once you have saved the bookmarklet, press the submit button. Depending on the web directory, you may receive an email either confirming your submission or just informing you about it.
  8. You can then repeat this process to around 20-30 online directories. Whenever the format of the submission form looks familar, just click on Bookmarks (on the top menu of the mozilla browser) and choose among the various bookmarklets. Thats the formsaver add-on in action.
  9. If you keep doing this for at least a week, your website should get sufficient links to be at least indexed online.

SEO Training - How to get to the first page of Search Engine Results

Add comment November 14th, 2006 04:42am Ely

Let’s do some practical Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Training. Our goal is to be on the first page of Search Engine Results.

Our first step is to find out what niche keywords we can target. We can use a tool like WordTracker for this. Here, we looked for terms relating to ‘SEO training’. The following keyword sets were shown to have little competition:

“seo training search engine optimisation search engine”

“engine expert optimization search training”

We found the words above by using an online tool called Wordtracker. We looked for words relating to SEO that didn’t have too much competition. According to the data, the phrases above are searched at least five times every day.

This website is pretty much Search Engine Optimized on site. We don’t need to do much there.  Our next step then would be to create web pages for those keywords.  It may not be exactly in that exact word order. It should make sense when read. Afterwhich we’d look for some incoming links using those phrases as part of the anchor text.
Let’s try it out!

Internet Marketing SEO - What’s the Status So Far?

Add comment November 10th, 2006 02:58am Ely

In the past 3 weeks, we’ve been testing how we could fare on certain SEO keywords. Our goal was to use the keywords ‘internet marketing seo.’ We prominently used this keyword and other similar phrases in the past ten posts and had these interlinked.

“Internet Marketing SEO” is a very competitive phrase. The very first link on Google Search Engine Results is the website of another SEO company. Checking the backlinks (the incoming links from other websites) of this top ‘Internet Marketing SEO’ website shows us:

  • Google - 1,150 backlinks
  • Yahoo - 21,520 inlinks
  • MSN - 51,743 incoming links

For us to get a higher ranking than this site, we would have to at least beat these numbers!

We will keep working on this but it may take us awhile before we see useful results. In the meantime, we will look for other less competitive but relevant SEO keywords that we can target. We will show you how to do that.

Internet Marketing Promotion, SEO and Website Design Development

Add comment November 7th, 2006 06:46am Ely

Internet Marketing, Promotions and SEO work is integral to website design development.

In our experience, it is much faster and easier to conduct web marketing campaigns when we have access to a website’s HTML/Php source code. Having access to the code would allow us to easily edit for keywords and upload new landing pages.

If we want to promote a website, the visual aspects are also important. We want to make sure that visitors who come to the webpage would find what they are looking for. If they came through a search engine referral, the keywords they used to get the a webpage should be noticeable.

If a visitor typed ’skin whitening soap’ on a search engine and your webpage came up on the first page , there is a good chance that the visitor would click on a link going to your site. When they get to your webpage, it would be eye-catching to actually have the words ‘Skin Whitening Soap’ on the web page itself. This makes it much more relevant to the visitor.

We then introduce the graphic elements. We can add, for instance, an image of a woman with soap, washing her face or her arms. This should add the right visual flair to make a viewer stay a little longer, and look at what’s on the rest of the page.

The next time you design a webpage, think about how you can effectively market it.
Then we add an identifiable action. We add a ‘buy now’ button. We add promotional information for those who will buy it within the day. This prompts the user to do something — in this case, buy the ’skin whitening’ soap.

Internet Marketing, Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

1 comment November 1st, 2006 10:38pm Ely

Internet Marketing for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) involves some basic steps:

  • Make your webpage “search engine” friendly
  • Get links to your site

How do you accomplish both? The first part basically involves knowing html and web page coding. You just have to edit your website to make sure the search engine bots (the ones that go around the net looking at sites and indexing whatever it finds) understand it.

The second part is trickier. First, get links from online directories, databases, news, submissions sites, social bookmarking sites, and wherever else you can scrounge on the web. Be resourceful, links can be found. Allocate an hour each day for this work and get 5-20 links. Do this daily for the duration of your campaign period.

Of course, make sure to use the keywords that you want to target.

Those are the basics. Now, go and SEO your site.

[Note: This is our eight post to target the keywords ‘internet marketing seo’ on SERPS. This is part of a live website experiment on how to do Search Engine Marketing.]

A basic rule of Internet Marketing and web site promotions is getting links. One great way of getting links for a website would be to submit to online directories. The following directories came from the v7n website forums. These are ranked based on the Page Strength tool of SEOMOZ.com.

Page Strength 10
http://dmoz.org/ (free)

Page Strength 9.5
http://dir.yahoo.com ($299 per year)
http://www.business.com/ ($199 per year)

Page Strength 8
http://botw.org/ ($149.95)

Page Strength 7.5
http://www.exactseek.com/ (free)
http://www.joeant.com/ ($39.99)

Page Strength 7
http://www.avivadirectory.com/ ($34.95 / $74.95)

Page Strength 6.5
http://www.alivedirectory.com/ ($34.95 / $74.95)
http://www.chiff.com/ ($59.95 per year)
http://www.elib.org/ (50 Euro)
http://www.gimpsy.com/ ($40)
http://www.goguides.org/ ($39.99 / $69.95)
http://www.relmaxtop.com/ ($20 per month)
http://www.sevenseek.com/ ($40 / $99.95)
http://www.skaffe.com/ ($44.99)
http://directory.sootle.com ($19.99)
http://www.uncoverthenet.com/ ($39 / $199 per year)
http://www.wowdirectory.com/ ($35 / $55 per year)

Page Strength 6
http://www.2yi.net/ ($5.95 / $24.95 per year)
http://www.dir777.com ($25 per month)
http://www.ezilon.com/ (free / $49)
http://www.familyfriendlysites.com/ ($4.95 per year + recip / $49.95 per year + recip)
http://www.goongee.com/ ($19.99)
http://www.haabaa.com/ (#30 / #50)
http://www.qango.com/ ($50)
http://sbd.bcentral.com ($49 per year)
http://directory.v7n.com ($79.95)
http://www.vxbox.com/ (free)
http://www.webworldindex.com/ ($25)

You might just want to submit your website in the directories above. Please note that the sites listed above have no links and are therefore, not clickable. We did this so as not to dilute the links for the page since we are also experimenting whether we can get top search engine spots for very competitive keywords (like ‘internet marketing seo’). Our previous post specifically targeted consultant internet marketing seo services site strategic web.
